REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS OF 1941 BOMBING

With the support of Palilula Municipality – City of Nis, the members of the Association of citizens `Stari Nis`, that cherishes the tradition and preserving cultural heritage of Nis, gathered to remember the April 8 1941 bombing victims at Nis Old Cemetery `Gorica`. On this occasion, after the commemoration service in the presence of the priests of Orthodox Episcopal Church, representatives of Association `Stari Nis` and delegation of Palilula Municipality, City of Nis, Association of the descendants of warriors, laid flowers and wreaths on memorial place and evoked the memories of Nis bombing 72 years ago.

Zlatko Semic, member of Palilula Municipal council, emphasized that Palilula actively works on the adaptation of this memorial complex under Gorica. After the works on Central and Eastern Gate, last year were also completed the works on the fence and Western Gate of Old Cemetery. This is our obligation for the citizens and historical heritage of the City of Nis – emphasized Semic. We are expecting that this year we continue the works and provide permanent protection and adaptation of memorial complex.

In that slaughter attack of fascist Germany, during the first years of the Second World War, in the ruins after the bombing of Nis civilians, about 400 people were killed and more than 500 wounded. All the victims were buried in Nis Old Cemetery one grave.

Commemoration to the victims of Nis on Old Cemetery this year was organized without Nikola Jovanovic, founder and long president of the Association of Stari Nis, recently passed away.
